The European Directive on Road Tunnel Safety has influenced the safety standards for many tunnels, not just those on the Trans-European Road Network. Recent research findings with respect to the potentially high fire heat release rate of “non-hazardous” loads and the efficacy of fire suppression systems have significantly changed the design outlook for tunnels.
